Perhaps you prefer a minimalist makeup routine. Or maybe you have a go-to five-step look. There’s a chance you can contour with your eyes closed, or that you’re still not sure where you’re supposed to put highlighter. No matter your makeup M.O., finding the right base products is the, um, foundation, for putting your best face forward.
That’s why, for this year’s SELF Healthy Beauty Awards, we were super picky about choosing the best foundations, concealers, and primers from the hundreds of submissions we received. Our rigorous selection process started with holding each product up to a set of standards based on criteria from board-certified dermatologists. Then we enlisted dozens of testers with a variety of skin types, tones, and concerns to vet and review the products that made the cut. The results: We ended up with 11 face-base winners that got glowing reviews all around.
Whether you’re looking to minimize under-eye circles, even out your complexion, conceal dark spots, prime your skin for makeup application, or achieve a fresh-from-a facial glow, these best-of-the-best base products have you covered (*wink*).

Bonus points, per the experts: This concealer contains vitamin C, which can fade hyperpigmentation over time, as well as hyaluronic acid and plant-derived squalane, both of which are ultramoisturizing and ideal for dry skin.

KVD Beauty Good Apple Lightweight Full-Coverage Concealer
“Full-coverage” doesn’t have to mean heavy, as evidenced by this both lightweight and opaque concealer. Reviewers noted that the silky formula wasn’t drying, didn’t crease, and produced serious, long-lasting coverage.
Bonus points, per the experts: This concealer contains hydrating raspberry extract, making it an ideal choice for dry skin.
One tester said: “I loved this concealer! The doe-foot applicator worked great, and it blends in really nicely with a beauty blender. It was brightening without making me look cakey or too white. It also didn’t dry up and crease.”

Chanel No. 1 De Chanel Revitalizing Foundation
Not too matte, not too shiny; not too heavy, not too light. This Goldilocks of foundations impressed reviewers with its just-right texture and coverage. Testers also loved how quickly and easily it absorbed into their skin.
Bonus points, per the experts: This foundation contains camellia seed oil—an ingredient rich in antioxidants, which can reduce signs of aging.
One tester said: “I have literally never found a foundation I enjoyed using until this one. It has buildable coverage and gives you a dewy, natural finish. It also sinks into your skin and doesn’t look like it’s just sitting on top. I hate to say it, but I’m obsessed.”
Best Powder Foundation: Good Mineral Loves You Back Three-in-One Foundation Powder

Good Mineral Loves You Back Three-in-One Foundation Powder
This product’s name refers to the fact that it acts as an all-in-one foundation, concealer, and powder. And our reviewers concur: They praised the formula for its velvety texture, buildable coverage, and ability to absorb excess oil and stay put.
Bonus points, per the experts: This powder has a mineral base, making it less likely to irritate sensitive skin. It’s also noncomedogenic, so it shouldn’t cause pimples. (Fun fact: The company was founded by two acne-prone sisters.)
One tester said: “I was very pleasantly surprised by this product! As promised by the description, the formula warms up and melts into your skin, which made it easier to blend. It didn’t make me look cakey like I expected—in fact, it actually looked better throughout the day as it settled. It wasn’t a perfect shade match for me, so I didn’t use it as my primary coverage, but it worked great as a light layer on areas where I tend to get oilier.”
Best Foundation for Mature Skin: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Perfector Four-in-One Whipped Matte Makeup

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Perfector Four-in-One Whipped Matte Makeup
No age-shaming here, but if you’re looking for a foundation that’ll make wrinkles less obvious and minimize dark circles and spots, our testers said this one delivers. Another standout benefit in the reviews: a super light, buildable formula that lets you control your coverage.
Bonus points, per the experts: This foundation has a silicone base that prevents moisture loss and temporarily fills in wrinkles—ideal for dry, mature skin.
One tester said: “The whipped texture of this ‘perfector’ makes it feel like I don’t have makeup on. I found that you need to apply a few coats in areas where you want extra coverage–like dark circles under your eyes or a blotchy spot on your cheek—but the layers blend really well.”
Best Skin Tint: Shiseido Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Tint SPF 20

Shiseido Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Tint SPF 20
Testers were impressed by this formula’s dewy effect and the fact that it provided a bit more coverage than you’d expect from a tinted moisturizer, while still feeling lightweight.
Bonus points, per the experts: This tinted moisturizer contains hyaluronic acid, a dermatology darling that moisturizes skin without clogging pores, and its SPF 20 rating means it’ll also help prevent skin damage from the sun’s harmful rays.
Just so you know: While any sun protection is better than no sun protection, dermatologists recommend an SPF rating of at least 30, so you’ll want to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen on top of this skin tint.
One tester said: “It has a glossy, but not greasy, sheen to it that makes my skin look dewy and fresh. It has a really lightweight finish, which will make it great for warmer temps. It’s also noncomedogenic (won’t clog pores) and helped hide the awful acne I’ve been currently battling without looking like makeup was caked on my face.”

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Nude Glow with SPF 40
We’re not ready to cosign on “better,” but this CC cream certainly seems to pack a bunch of skin benefits into a small tube. In particular, our testers loved that it offered natural-looking coverage, hydration, and sun protection. They also noted that it was easy to find their shade match (not surprising, considering there are 22 shades to choose from).
Bonus points, per the experts: This CC cream contains hydrating hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, a brightening ingredient that can fade hyperpigmentation and reduce redness and inflammation.
One tester said: “I’m a big fan of multitasking makeup with SPF and this product was easy to apply, matched my skin well, and left me with an incredible glow. It lasted all day and did not dry out my skin or accentuate my wrinkles—a pet peeve of mine that I’ve experienced often with other foundations.”

Purelisse Ageless Glow Serum BB Cream SPF 40
Moisture. Sun protection. Skin-care actives. Subtle, buildable coverage. A natural finish. This does-it-all BB cream checked all of our reviewer’s boxes.
Bonus points, per the experts: This BB cream contains bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative that can fade dark spots and reduce the appearance of fine lines without irritating sensitive skin. It also has vitamin C, another skin brightener.
One tester said: “The product feels thick when it comes out of the tube, but after some light dabbing and blending, you don’t even notice that you’re wearing any product. I love that it combines skin-care ingredients—including bakuchiol and vitamin C—with light coverage. It made my skin feel so smooth and hydrated, it didn’t cake, and once I blended it in, it matched my olive skin tone almost perfectly. There is a light scent to the serum, but it didn’t irritate my skin.”

NYX Plump Right Back Plumping Serum + Primer
This multitasker got high praise for moisturizing skin and doing what primers do best: create an ideal base layer for makeup, helping it go on smoother and last longer. Testers particularly liked how it made their skin look glowy but not shiny.
Bonus points, per the experts: This primer contains hyaluronic acid, a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog pores.
Just so you know: It also contains fragrance, which can be irritating to sensitive skin.
One tester said: “The texture reminds me of a slightly sticky serum and it acted as a really nice, not-too-wet, not-too-dry base beneath foundation. It’s hydrating, too, and its dewy effect makes me feel like a beauty TikToker!”

Wet n Wild Bare Focus Clarifying Finishing Powder
Setting powder isn’t just for the oily faced: Testers of all skin types appreciated this one’s ability to lock in foundation and concealer while providing a matte finish that didn’t dry out their skin.
Bonus points, per the experts: This powder contains witch hazel, oatmeal, chamomile, and tea tree extracts, all of which can help calm inflammation (including acne).
One tester said: “I loved how silky this felt on my skin. It doesn’t provide a ton of coverage, but it was perfect for wearing on top of foundation and concealer—and for touch-ups throughout the day. And my favorite part? It’s super compact and can fit in my purse or jacket. For the price, you can’t really beat this powder!”
Best Setting Spray: Hard Candy Sheer Envy Stay ’N’ Slay Setting Spray
Courtesy of brand / Amanda K Bailey
Hard Candy Sheer Envy Stay ’N’ Slay Setting Spray
A good setting spray minimizes makeup transfer (prevents it from getting all over your shirt, face mask, etc.) without drying out your skin. Per our testers, this one delivers on both fronts—and comes in a perfectly portable package.
Bonus points, per the experts: Both the hyaluronic acid and aloe vera in this setting spray can help boost hydration and calm sensitive or irritated skin.
One tester said: “A lot of setting sprays are all hype with no visible benefits, but not this one! For starters, it’s travel-friendly, which I appreciated as someone who is constantly moving around. It also feels really refreshing and is fantastic for setting shimmer shadows, as it lessens the amount of fallout under the eyes. While it didn’t completely stop makeup transference, it definitely minimized it and set my makeup in place for hours on end. Once, after 10 hours of wear, my makeup was still intact!”
