The following incidents can be self-reported to the Champaign Police Department:

• Abandoned Vehicle
• Animal Complaints
• Assault (Offender gone and no domestic relationship with the offender)
• Battery (No injury, offender gone, and no domestic relationship with the offender)
• Camera Registration
• Civil Matter / Neighbor Problem
• Credit Card Fraud
• Custody Order Violation

• Harassing/Annoying Phone Calls, Messaging, or Texting

Online reporting may NOT be used to report lost/stolen license plates or firearms. Please contact the Champaign Police Department at 217-351-4545.

*Domestic violence is not a self-reportable crime.* Any person who hits, chokes, kicks, threatens, harasses, or interferes with the personal liberty of another family or household member has broken Illinois Domestic Violence law. Under Illinois law family or household members are defined as

• family members related by blood;
• people who are married or used to be married;
• people who share or used to share a home, apartment, or other common dwelling;
• people who have or allegedly have child in common or a blood relationship through a child in common;
• people who are dating or engaged or used to date, including same sex couples; or
• people with disabilities and their personal assistants.

Reporting incidents in the Campustown area:

• Effective October 1, 2022, online reports cannot be accepted for the Campustown area, as bounded by Springfield Avenue on the north, Windsor Road on the south, Neil Street on the west, and Wright Street on the east. As of this date, this area is serviced primarily by the University of Illinois Police Department. Certain report types, including thefts, vandalism, and lost property can be filed online with UIPD. For other reports, please call 217-333-1216.

• Once your report is submitted, you should receive an email notification that includes a temporary file number. Please be sure to check your Spam or Junk Mail email folder, or add coplogic.com to your trusted email list.
• Following the submission of a report, it is reviewed by officers at the Champaign Police Department.All incidents filed using the Citizen Reporting System will be reviewed.
• Upon review, if further investigation of your case is needed, you may be contacted.
• Any time the status changes as part of a review, you will receive an additional email. Possible status changes include:
  • Approval.
  • Return for Follow-Up or Correction. Once a report is flagged for follow-up or correction, you must take the necessary steps outlined in the email and resubmit the report.
  • Rejection. A report is typically rejected because it occurred outside of our jurisdiction. In that instance, please file the report with the appropriate agency. A report may also be rejected because it is an incident that can not be self-reported and would require an officer response.
• Once a report has been appropriately completed and approved, it will be filed in the Department’s Records Management System and may be assigned to an officer.

Please note that the decision to assign an officer or investigator to follow up on a reported crime is based on several criteria, including the seriousness of the offense, solvability, patterns of behavior, and incidents that are, or may become, sensitive in nature. In determining which cases should be assigned, supervisors shall consider, but not be limited by, the following factors:

• The time elapsed from the time of occurrence to the time of the report.
• The existence of witnesses.
• The existence of physical evidence.
• The ability to identify a suspect.
• The ability to identify a suspect’s vehicle.
• The impact of the incident on the community.
